Meadville Mail
Click on the above link to go directly to web mail or read on for further information on web mail and for information to help to set up e-mail clients to download your Meadville mail to your PC.
The login prompt to the new web mail system requires a "meadville\" placed before the username. Where you previously entered "user", you must now enter "meadville\user".
If you have a problem or questions about your account please send a message to Deborah Bieber, Vice President, Finance and Administration at dbieber@meadville.edu explaining the problem you are experiencing in as much detail as possible.
The web mail system uses the new Microsoft Outlook Web Access interface. If you have used Outlook 2000 or 2003, this interface will be very familiar. Otherwise, the interface has a Help menu.
You may select multiple messages (for deletion, for example) by holding down the CTRL key while clicking, or by pressing the SHIFT key while clicking on a message to select a block starting with the previously-selected message.
A spam filter is available. To enable it, click on the Options button of the left panel, scroll down to the Privacy and Junk E-mail Prevention section, and place a check mark on "Filter Junk E-Mail." You can control the filter's settings and target lists by clicking on the Manage Junk E-mail Lists button. You can "train" the filter by right-clicking on messages in the Inbox and Junk E-mail folders: in the former to add message senders to blacklists, and in the latter to add senders to whitelists. You can move messages from the Junk E-mail folder to the Inbox by dragging.
With the arrival of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, Internet Explorer has acquired a pop-up blocker. You should configure this pop-up blocker to exempt the Meadville web site and the web mail site. Within Internet Explorer, open the Tools menu, select Pop-Up Blocker, and then Pop-Up Blocker Settings. Add "http://www.meadville.edu" and "http://mail.meadville.edu/exchange" to the list of sites to allow.
If you wish to set up an e-mail client application such as Outlook or Eudora on your personal computer to download messages from the mail server, here is the relevant information. You should set the POP and SMTP server names to be mail.meadville.edu. Do not change the default POP and SMTP port numbers. For SMTP, enable options that specify that you need to "authenticate to use the SMTP server," and that the POP settings are to be used for that authentication. For your username, use your login name without the "meadville\." If you wish to be able to use both web mail and your PC to read mail, you must enable the option to "leave messages on the server." Note that if you delete a message from web mail before your PC can download it, then it will never appear in your PC.
Be aware that the functionality of the SMTP configuration is dependent upon your Internet service provider's policy. Some providers, such as SBC, require you to use their SMTP servers and will prevent you from using mail.meadville.edu for SMTP services. They will provide you with the name of their SMTP servers. |
