Bumbaugh Promoted to Full Professor
April 21, 2005
During their meeting in March, the Board of Trustees of Meadville Lombard Theological School voted unanimously to promote David Bumbaugh to the rank of full professor.
Bumbaugh, BD ’64, returned to Meadville Lombard in 1999, after serving 40 years in parish ministry. He says that teaching at Meadville Lombard is a good way to “round out” a career during which he served congregations in six states, as well as gained extensive community ministerial experience, and wrote two books.
Through courses such as “Arts of Ministry” and “Advanced Preaching,” Bumbaugh brings to life the realities of ministry for his students, helping to prepare them to serve not only as parish ministers, but as religious educators, community ministers, or chaplains as well.
Bumbaugh also teaches courses meant to help students returning from their one-year internships integrate what they learned away from the classroom with what they are learning within it. “I get to see students at critical moments,” Bumbaugh said of this type of teaching. “Often they come back from their internships with questions or unresolved issues,” Bumbaugh said, adding that the course is designed to help the students understand and resolve those questions and issues.
Bumbaugh says he never thought of himself as anything but a parish minister, but has found great satisfaction in teaching the students at Meadville Lombard. “I’m deeply impressed by the quality of the students we have here,” he said.
